Quick update...
The night shift has been pretty rough on Ben. However, the first three or four nights were the worst, and these last three or so have been much better. His knee is okay, he can walk and do most normal things, he just can't do the things he really loves...like surfing. He is going to see an orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible to try and schedule a surgery for one of his off weeks. This surgery should have a relatively short recovery period...
Ben's truck is totaled, so there is a 4 runner in our carport that is very smelly and essentially has no right half of an engine, only copper wires with lots of charcoal. The fire also busted through to the passenger side of the car inside, but didn't get too far into the car. Ben loved getting to go to work, and having to ask for a new pager. When they asked him why, he said, "Oh, my pager got destroyed when the fire department was spraying their chemicals to put the fire out." Good for shock value.
Caleb seemed to thoroughly enjoy his birthday. He asked me this morning, again, very groggy, "Mommy, am I still three?" We have assured him that there is no turning back!!
Here is a picture of a really sad attempt at an elephant on the cake. Elephants are Caleb's favorite animal. But just so you know, art is not one of my strong points.

That's a lovely elephant! I thought the bakery made it, until you said that.
I think that is a very good elephant if I don say so myself!
I was just going to say how good that elephant looks : ) And the cake too : ) Thanks for the update. Grave-yard shifts are grueling. Ryan worked full time grave-yards while in school and it was crazy. He could fall asleep anywhere ...
Seriously, you guys are just too nice. When I brought the cake out, we sang, and Caleb blew out the candles. Then I asked him what was on the cake, and he said, "I don't know!!" After about five guesses, he figured it out. =)
P.S. I didn't make the cake. My mom picked an empty one at VONS, because I completely neglected to plan anything for my son's birthday. I know...so sad.
Okay, I can't even draw a stick figure. I was going to comment on how cute the cake was anyway. And, you have the trunk on the elephant in the right place (ha ha Amber S. LOL)
That looks like a pretty good elephant to me!
I'm glad you "stumbled upon" my blog. Thanks for leaving a comment to let me know you were there!
I've enjoyed reading through your blog this morning. I especially appreciate your recognition of our need for HOPE!
Your comment about the cake reminds me of my daughter's birthday several years ago. Like you, I am not an artist, but I tried to make her cake cute with colorful little lines and squiggles. My mother-in-law came in the house, saw the cake and smiled and asked if my daughter (who was probably 5 or 6 at the time) had decorated it. Ouch!
